TUESDAY, April 27                     [Zita of Tuscany]

Luke 6:12 Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God.

Often when I lead vestry retreats, we will start talking about big challenges that a church faces. It is not uncommon for a vestry member to say, “We should spend time in prayer about this issue.” The reaction can vary. Another person might downplay the idea of prayer, suggesting that nuts-and-bolts business principles be applied. It’s an understandable reaction, in a way. We don’t want to squander the resources of the church because of poor thinking. Indeed, we should do our due diligence to ensure we make wise decisions. It’s also true that we need to listen for God’s call to us, whether we are deciding things for ourselves or for our church.

Jesus had some big decisions to make, and so he spent a whole night in prayer. If Jesus Christ, fully divine and fully human, needed to take time to pray, we should not imagine we can make big decisions without lots of time in prayer.

MOVING FORWARD: How much time do you spend in prayer? Try adding a minute a day for the next month.
