FRIDAY, July 27

Psalm 40:1-2 I waited patiently upon the LORD; he stooped to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.

“So what happened?” the woman at the desk asked. “Where did you fall?” When I told her, she nodded her head knowingly. “A lot of people get tripped up there.” “There,” in this case, was the breakwater in Rockland, Maine, an almost mile-long jetty composed of massive granite blocks, leading to a nineteenth-century lighthouse.

My friends and I had made it nearly all the way back when the toe of my boot caught on some uneven blocks, sending me toppling onto the rock headfirst. The fall not only broke my glasses but also left me with a pretty good gash on my forehead.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a life-long klutz. Imagine my joy, then, when my husband gave me a pair of collapsible trekking poles for my birthday. The rocks are no less treacherous, but I’m now as sure-footed as the best of them.

MOVING FORWARD: What’s the most thoughtful gift you’ve been given? Thank the giver with a phone call or note today.
