Mark 6:5-6 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Both my mother and I are communication directors for two different Episcopal parishes. It is a joy to share this experience and to support one another. In my own wrestling with the challenges of this work, I gain renewed appreciation for my mother and just how good she is at her job.

One of the side effects of this connection is that many folks see me only as “Sarah’s daughter.” I’m proud to be associated with my mom. But I also want to forge my own path—so I chose a path that took me almost 3,000 miles away.

I feel such a kinship with Jesus in this story. Can you imagine that after all that he has accomplished, he’s still not being taken seriously by the community that raised him?

MOVING FORWARD: Have you ever felt unseen by the community that raised you? How has this changed the way you relate to younger folks you are watching grow up?
