TUESDAY, August 27

Acts 26:29 Paul replied, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also all who are listening to me today might become such as I am—except for these chains.”

Paul has been in prison at Caesarea for two years, and he is in what seems to be a constant state of self-defense. And yet Paul is always telling the story of Jesus of Nazareth. He will not be deterred. Agrippa himself accuses Paul of trying to convert him.

I don’t know what kind of sense of humor Paul has—or if he has one. I suspect he is a pretty serious dude—but I think this verse is hilarious. Yes, Paul agrees, I pray everybody becomes like me. You know…except for that part about the chains.

We should take our faith seriously—but not ourselves! Jesus’ friends and disciples are real people who tell jokes, enjoy shared meals, and value humanity more than legality. I am not surprised that even Paul can find humor in dark times. May it be so for us.

MOVING FORWARD: Who helps you take your faith seriously without taking yourself too seriously?
