1 Kings 6:7 The house was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that neither hammer nor ax nor any tool of iron was heard in the temple while it was being built.
In our Old Testament reading, we hear about the construction of the temple of Solomon. Scripture lays out the practical details of international trade agreements and dubious labor policies. Most surprising are the instructions that the stone be cut at the quarry so that hammers, axes, and other loud tools were not heard at the temple site itself. The final building work was carried out in relative silence.
In a world with the continual din of beeping notifications, twenty-four-hour television, and the hum of climate control systems, we benefit by doing holy work in relative silence. We also give thanks for the witness of those who live in that silence every day.
MOVING FORWARD: Close your eyes and sit in silence for ten minutes.
