TUESDAY, October 28       Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles

Ephesians 2:18-19 Through [Christ Jesus] both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.

There I was, a newcomer to the church, and the only one to show up for Sunday School. The rector sat down comfortably and opened his book. I began to apologize, offering to come back the next week. I didn’t want him to waste his time. “Don’t worry,” he smiled, “all the choirs of angels are here too.” Eventually, one or two others arrived, and we settled back for an energetic and spirited discussion.

I have never forgotten his hospitality. He later became our bishop, known throughout the diocese for his pastoral heart. The household of God is open-hearted and welcoming, I learned that day. It really is the case that when two or three are gathered, there the Spirit is. Or there it should be. If we practice that kind of ministry of presence to those who approach the church’s door with tentative steps, then we too can look forward when the time comes to being welcomed by choirs of angels.
