MONDAY, October 28
Saint Simon and Saint Jude

John 15:17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

The world hates many of us, labeling us as “other” to exclude and erase us. If we don’t have a house in a certain neighborhood, shop at the right mall, or buy those fancy shoes—we are nothing.

One year, when I was still teaching fifth grade in Houston, the district thought adopting school uniforms would discourage classroom distractions and bullying. Predictably, instead of bullying over the right pair of jeans, bullying happened over the right kinds of shoes. Tears and shame followed.

My answer to these bullying cycles was to have “family circle” time in my classroom twice a week. We each shared what was happening in our lives and promised to help each other—to be family to one another. I knew that nurturing loving relationships among my students was the key to ending cycles of bullying. The students began standing up for each other and caring for one another in profound ways. Their lives and mine were transformed by love.

MOVING FORWARD: Find three or four friends that you can have "family circle" time with this week. See how it changes your relationships.
