MONDAY, December 28                  Holy Innocents

Matthew 2:13 Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

Joseph’s mind must be in such a spin—weird dreams with angels and wise men and a new baby and more weird dreams with angels. He’s dealing with a lot of new information and a significant amount of pressure from all angles.

Joseph does what parents all over the world do when their babies are in danger. He listens to God’s message and direction, as dangerous and ill-advised as it might appear to our eyes and understandings, and he follows through. This brave father does all he can to save his baby, his precious boy, this little life he did not create but is in charge of keeping. He cannot save all the babies, but he can save this One. May we have the courage to do the same.
