THURSDAY, February 28

Matthew 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.

Among the many difficult tasks facing medical doctors is talking with patients about changes they need to make in order to become healthier. We do not like being told what to do, and we are easily offended. But good doctors care more about healing than they do about being liked.

Some notable Christians throughout the centuries have taken this teaching quite literally, and mortification of the flesh has been alternately practiced and prohibited by a wide variety of clerics, theologians, and regular folk. Given that we do not see any self-dismemberment among Jesus’ closest followers, I don’t think we are called to do the same. But Jesus knows what he is doing when he uses strong language, and we would be foolish to ignore this warning.

MOVING FORWARD: Are there any “right hands” you need to examine in your life today?
