SATURDAY, March 28                  James S. Russell

Mark 9:24 Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

This one verse from Mark’s ninth chapter is a microcosm of the Biblical witness to the human condition and our dependence on God’s mercy. Understanding the Bible’s witness to God in Christ allows us to reclaim the Bible’s immediacy and integrity—for our world and ourselves. The Bible speaks of that for which our hearts cry out—belonging, salvation, companionship, and peace.

The Bible speaks of God revealed in Christ and has its primary expression as it is preached, read, and heard in the gathered church—the Word alive and active. It is then that God’s love in Christ is heard as love-in-action. This shows us the way to live in belief and faith in the world. It is in the world that our witness to Christ becomes the catalyst for change.

MOVING FORWARD: What does witnessing to the world look like in your own life and in the life of your faith community?
