Matthew 20:26 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant.

As I write this essay, the news media is obsessing over which billionaire is currently the richest person in the world. One day, the market performs better in one category, so it’s billionaire A, while the next, the market performs better in another category, so it’s billionaire B. Knowing precisely who the richest person in the world is doesn’t really interest or concern me, but it has made me wonder about our societal values.

Most of us are well aware of the way the world works, but imagine for a moment a society that lists the top ten philanthropists and humanitarians rather than lists of the people with the most money. Imagine a society that values teachers and other public servants in the same way as corporate executives. Imagine a society that treats serving our neighbors as the highest measure of personal success. That kind of utopia can seem far off, but it is precisely the kind of world Jesus invites us into—a world where the greatest among us are the servants of all.

MOVING FORWARD: How have you served others this week? How have others served you? Have you learned anything new about your servant heart this week?
