Psalm 139:6-7 Where can I go then from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there also.

While it may not be poetic to think of existence in terms of a Venn diagram—that is, as circles on a blackboard—it might be instructive nonetheless. If God is A, then where is B, the circle that represents us? Some people might draw A as a big balloon hanging by itself in space, far away from the smaller B circle. Others might show the two circles overlapping but just barely. My own vision is of B nestled totally inside of A.

“Where can I go then from your Spirit?” the psalmist asks. I’ve asked that question too. Is it those places where I run when I’m feeling overwhelmed? Or angry? Or unsure that God exists? No, the psalmist says. No matter how far away you think you are, you’re still immersed in the Divine.

A priest I knew in college used to tell me something like that. When I went to him with my doubts and confusion, he reminded me that when I felt like I had lost my grip, God was still holding on to me. That was all I needed to know.

MOVING FORWARD: Before worship tomorrow, kneel and offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God for holding you tightly, always.
