Psalm 119:82 My eyes have failed from watching for your promise, and I say, “When will you comfort me?”
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a Welsh Protestant minister and medical doctor, made this observation: “Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself?” The psalmist, only eight verses after the lament quoted above, counteracts his despair by talking to himself, proclaiming that God’s “faithfulness remains from one generation to another” (verse 90).
As someone who struggles with depressive thoughts, I understand my friend’s feelings. But I try to remind myself of God’s character and promises. After all, the God who loved the whole world enough to die for us is unchanging in this love, yesterday, today, and forever.
MOVING FORWARD: Proclaim God’s faithfulness as a reminder of abiding love.
