Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined from ore and purified seven times in the fire.

God’s words come to us in myriad ways. Anyone who has heard God’s still, small voice nudging the soul has heard the word of God. The joyful sensation we feel in communion with other Christians is God working in us. God’s word can also come to us in the counsel of wise friends. There is something pure—and purifying—about receiving a word from God. When we have the ears to hear God speaking, the noise around us and within us is stilled.

The process of refining silver from ore is called smelting. Smelting is done at such a high heat (+/- 2000 degrees for silver) that the substance of the ore is changed. Impurities are driven off, and the resulting product is the purest form of the substance.

When we allow it—when we persist in taking it into ourselves—the pure word of God can be the fire that burns away our impurities and refines us to our purest selves.

MOVING FORWARD: Using a concordance, find the other places in the Bible where God talks about refining ore and purifying with fire.
