WEDNESDAY, January 29

Psalm 49:16-17 Do not be envious when some become rich, or when the grandeur of their house increases; For they will carry nothing away at their death, nor will their grandeur follow them.

If you want to experience the truth of this verse, visit a nursing home. I spend time in one weekly, bringing communion and prayers to the residents.

Wealth and poverty. Beauty and plainness. Prestige and humility. It’s all stripped away in the final stage of life, in the place I refer to as “God’s waiting room.”

All the wealth and power this world tells us to focus on will fade away. We are children of God, baptized into Christ. That is the one and only source of our worth. And it cannot be increased by any accumulation of wealth or decreased by any depth of poverty. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Talk to your priest about becoming a eucharistic visitor to folks in nursing homes, assisted living communities, or homebound people in your congregation.
