Psalm 47:1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with a cry of joy.

One of the things I love about flying into Latin American airports is that people clap when the plane lands. I have never asked why this happens, but I love it. I also love that when Latino/a folks are together, we clap along to songs. We will clap even when we don’t know what we are singing!

The first time I sang in Cuba, people started clapping along to one of my ballads. This took me by surprise because I had my eyes closed. We—the audience and myself—connected in song, beyond words. One thing people always tell me about my culture is that we are so joyful: “Your music makes me want to clap and dance.”

Our music comes from pain. Our rhythms come from our African and indigenous ancestors. We were almost wiped out, but we survived. We thrived. We clap for joy because when others wished us gone, God kept us. We clap with gratitude and joy.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you clap along to music? Why or why not?
