John 8:43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word.
This response is rarely a genuine request for a more complete explanation but rather is code for, “I don’t like what you’re saying, and I don’t want to hear it.”
This is how Jesus’ followers react to his words that they are slaves to sin and that he has been sent from God to free them. They don’t like what he is saying, and they don’t want to hear it.
Jesus says many things I would prefer not to get: Love your enemies, turn the other cheek, don’t accumulate treasures on earth, happy are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness. We are all slaves to sin, and becoming free is not a do-it-yourself project.
