Matthew 13:55-56 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?
The people in Nazareth struggle to reconcile Jesus’ family of origin with this strange figure who returns home to them, preaching about forgiveness and redemption and peace. Surprisingly, it is the fact that they have watched Jesus grow up that makes them blind to who he has become as an adult.
Sometimes, we forget to see how and who people really are—especially those closest or most familiar to us. We are all changing and growing into the people God is calling us to be. Jesus did this in front of his whole hometown, and we do it every day in front of our friends and family.
