Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles

John 21:15a When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

My daughters frequently get crossways with one another, and I cannot count how many times we have said to them, “Now, say you’re sorry.” Many people have the understanding that an apology is necessary for forgiveness. But look at Jesus: He comes to Peter for reconciliation and skips through bartering over sin and forgiveness. Jesus makes the entire transaction about one thing: love.

Jesus asks Peter if he loves him three times, and three times Peter responds, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus’ forgiveness of Peter is implicit in the conversation itself. Jesus gives us a new way of living with each other, and that new way centers on love and grace. With love and grace in his eyes, Jesus says to Peter—and to you and me: If you love me, feed my sheep and follow me.

MOVING FORWARD: Do some research and thinking about Peter and Paul this week. How have they shaped your life and that of the church?
