MONDAY, July 29

Psalm 57:7-8 My heart is firmly fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and make melody. Wake up, my spirit; awake, lute and harp; I myself will waken the dawn.

One of the many summer camp traditions at Shrine Mont is the morning wakeup call. I have witnessed several iterations of this practice: a large bell, brass instruments, (and perhaps most dramatically) a speaker system that blasted whatever music the program director deemed loud or rowdy enough to inspire sleepy-eyed campers to brush their teeth, dress, make their beds, and get ready for the day’s activities.

I’m not a morning person at all, but I can say honestly that I welcomed those raucous sounds more often than not. There’s something about the exuberant, insistent joy of a wakeup call, one that encourages us to seize the day. That leap out of bed is as much a leap of faith as any we undertake in our waking life.

MOVING FORWARD: What is your favorite way to wake up and leap into the new day?
