WEDNESDAY, July 29                           Mary and Martha of Bethany

Psalm 119:73-74 Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments. Those who fear you will be glad when they see me, because I trust in your word.

On this day in 1974, eleven women became the first ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. Their ordinations helped move the church toward a fuller expression of ministry and reconciliation. How fitting for this event to happen on the feast of Mary and Martha of Bethany.

The complexity of Mary and Martha’s relationship to each other and with Jesus reveals different aspects of Jesus' humanity, divinity and ministry. Being who we are in relationship to Jesus is the only way to a real and authentic relationship with him.

Jesus clearly valued Mary and Martha’s friendship and love. When we live faithful lives where friends are always welcome and there is always room at the table, we live into their example. Thanks be to God.

MOVING FORWARD: Do some research on the first ordained women in the Episcopal Church, known as the Philadelphia Eleven.
