THURSDAY, July 29                  Mary and Martha of Bethany

Mark 7:8 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.

I’ve been learning a lot about the history of the church, and I’ve been thinking a lot about Jesus’ words to the Pharisees. So often, the Pharisees completely miss the point of scripture and hinder people from experiencing the love of God. If Jesus returned today, I wonder: would we welcome him into our churches? Would he be “saved”? Do our human traditions overshadow the commandments of God: to love God first and foremost, and to love our neighbors as ourselves?

Before Jesus went to the cross, he prayed for the church to be one as he and the Father are one, because by the church’s unity, the world would believe that God sent him (John 17:21).

Lord, help us unite your church. Encourage us to not be so tied to our traditions that we cause others, especially our siblings in Christ, to feel excluded from the Body. Please purify our hearts and make us clean. Amen.

MOVING FORWARD: Did you know that one of the promises a bishop makes during the ordination service is to protect the unity of the church? Why do you think the ordination service includes this duty?
