FRIDAY, January 3

John 6:27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.

A few years ago I was out of work for the first time in my adult life. I ended up finding a sales job and lived solely off commissions. Each week was an exercise in faith.

Through that experience I learned to feed on the “food that endures for eternal life.” Jesus directs our attention to holy food, not because he doesn’t want to feed our bodies but because he wants us to break the cycle of worrying over the next meal, the next paycheck, the next set of bills. Because those things won’t last forever.

Our true purpose—whatever our life’s work may be—is to build up the Body of Christ, which lasts from age to age and feeds us eternally through the love and grace of God.

MOVING FORWARD: Share a meal with someone in your life who may need some soul-level nourishment this weekend.
