SUNDAY, January 3                  2 Christmas

Luke 2:51-52 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.

As a youth, I stayed out way past my curfew. When I arrived in our neighborhood, I had my buddy turn off the headlights about a block away from my house. I slunk out of the car, tiptoed up the sidewalk, and gingerly opened our front door.

Just as I was about to celebrate pulling off the biggest ruse of my young life, the lights in the living room came on. Both my parents were sitting there, looking at me. My parents got up and wordlessly walked to their room, closed the door, and went to bed. I was never late again without calling.

In today’s reading from Luke, Jesus is merely a twelve-year-old boy. His parents, like mine, had “great anxiety.” Today, in this season of the Incarnation, meditate on the humanness of Jesus.

MOVING FORWARD: Which young person in your life reminds you of this story about Jesus? Give them a word of encouragement—and their parents, too.
