SUNDAY, November 3                           21 Pentecost

Luke 12:30-31 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Anxiety is a natural and unavoidable emotion. So, we might wonder if Jesus is guilting us about our feelings. I think not. When Jesus talks about people who are anxious about food or clothing, he’s not necessarily indicating ill-fed or ill-clad people but perhaps the folks who are trying to keep up with haute cuisine or haute couture.

A friend once sought my counsel over a possible vocational calling to the priesthood. This friend was very attached to an academic career, having just finished a doctorate. I asked if my friend was willing to surrender “Professor” for “the Reverend” and suggested that if he was, God would likely give my friend back what may have felt like something he had to surrender—and so much more.

MOVING FORWARD: With whom do you talk through your anxieties? Thank that person today.
