THURSDAY, December 3                  [Francis Xavier]

Isaiah 2:17 The haughtiness of people shall be humbled, and the pride of everyone brought low; and the LORD alone will be exalted on that day.

From the Archives: April 14, 1956

Do the moral and ethical teachings of Jesus ever frustrate you? They do me. They nearly got me down once. I wanted to be good. I tried to fulfill all the requirements of Christianity. I wanted to be acceptable to God. I can still see myself sitting there on the right side of the nave—stiff, uncomfortable, and unhappy.

Then came that Christmas with the utter joy of it removed, and the essence of religion departed from it. I was a pious Puritan, but I was lost and miserable.

Love your neighbor as yourself. Love God with everything that you are. Go the second mile. Love your enemies. Turn the other cheek. Pray unceasingly. Give your cloak also.

We cannot earn our way to God. The forgiving, loving relationship with God is the free unmerited gift of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

MOVING FORWARD: Find a unique way to love your neighbor today.
