WEDNESDAY, February 3 Anskar

Mark 8:12 And [Jesus] sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

Context is everything with this verse. When the Pharisees come to Jesus and ask for a sign to test him, Jesus has just performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes, feeding four thousand people. It is no wonder that he sighs deeply. I would have rolled my eyes as well.

It isn’t that Jesus is unwilling to give them a sign. He performs all sorts of miracles and wonders. Yet, these religious leaders cannot see a sign when one is right in front of them.

To receive a sign, we must be willing and open to seeing one. Let us pray for such sight.
