SUNDAY, May 3                           4 Easter

John 10:9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.

Pepper doesn’t like the gate. Our daughter’s horse is full of personality, doting at times and persnickety at others, but for some reason, the gate into the arena always spooks her.

Our daughter competes in rodeos, racing on Pepper around barrels and poles at lightning pace. Hundredths of a second separate the contestants. These young women put in countless hours of training as well as the thankless work of mucking stalls, picking out clods from hooves, feeding, watering, and corralling their horses.

In the arena, these cowgirls are fierce competitors. Yet every time Pepper bucks at the gate, these women rally around our daughter, pushing her horse toward the arena, pulling on the reins, or even creating a wall of horses so Pepper doesn’t have a choice but to go forward.

Jesus is the gate, but I thank God for faithful followers like these cowgirls who are willing to nudge, poke, and prod when I need encouragement to enter.

MOVING FORWARD: Give thanks for the people who help you follow Christ—even when you buck and stall.
