SATURDAY, August 3

2 Samuel 6:10 So David was unwilling to take the ark of the Lord into his care in the city of David; instead David took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

For the next few days, we will read about King David returning from a military triumph and some of the decisions he makes in setting up his reign. He has named the new capital after himself and come into possession of the Ark of the Covenant—the most important physical possession in Israel. But David’s response to the great honor of hosting the ark: No thanks! We don’t know why David isn’t interested. What is he thinking?

One late Saturday afternoon I received a call that I was needed to open up the seminary bookstore and let an esteemed alumnus shop. I walked to work rolling my eyes and stomping my feet.

I remember the kindness this stranger shone on me during that afternoon. The years have not dimmed the unlikely shine of this experience. If I had let annoyance keep me from going, I would never know what joy I missed. Declining an offer and setting boundaries can be important skills, but we must take care we are not refusing a blessing from God.

MOVING FORWARD: When have you said, “no thanks,” and wished you had chosen differently?
