MONDAY, September 3       Labor Day (USA)

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

I studied liberation theology and African-American history in college. I learned about the pitfalls of global capitalism and the preferential option for the poor. And I immersed myself in the stories of political revolution, nonviolent resistance, and the radical roots of Jesus’ movement of liberation for the poor. I graduated from college four years ago and have found life as a young adult Christian a pretty difficult row to hoe. Life post-college has felt very much like spiritual warfare—the voices of the world tell me to get a credit card and open a 401k, and the voices of theologians I love remind me about children who don’t have clean drinking water because of trade agreements and the unabashed worship of commerce.

A phrase I have been working with lately is this: “How can I follow Jesus with my whole life?” So much of faith is spiritual, inner work, but we must take care to incorporate the Bible’s clear directives, especially on topics such as money that we may prefer to ignore.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you find that your ideals are in conflict with daily responsibilities and realities? How can you find a way to honor both?
