TUESDAY, September 3

James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder.

On several occasions when I was younger, eager evangelists showed up at my door asking if I had accepted Christ. I discovered that if I answered, “No, but I’d like to,” they would offer some prayer I was to repeat and then be on their way to scout for another conversion.

Looking back, I’m not so sure I was the only one being disingenuous in that encounter. What was the value of enticing me to acknowledge the reality of Jesus without a corresponding commitment to actually “doing” Christ in my life?

James makes the case that a faith that doesn’t translate into daily action isn’t really faith at all. As much as it is important for us to know, understand, and accept the reality of Jesus, James points out the importance of being Christ to one another, of living the way Jesus asks us to live.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you make your faith active today? Go and “do” Christ in your home, work, and neighborhood.
