FRIDAY, September 3                  [Phoebe]

Mark 15:27 And with him they crucified two bandits, one on his right and one on his left.

Christianity was never meant to be only a solitary or individualistic experience. From the beginning, we see God deliberately choosing community as the place where love, healing, and reconciliation happen.

Jesus was born into community (Mary and Joseph) and carried out his ministry in community (the twelve disciples). In today’s gospel reading, we are reminded that Jesus died within community.

Our world is hurting. The pendulum toward individualism has swung too far, and Western society is suffering from the extreme loneliness this has wrought. So what can we do? If individualism is not God’s plan for how love and hope spread, what is? If we look at what God has always been up to, then community is the plan. You are the plan. I am the plan. And if we take the initiative to follow Jesus’ example and gather with others for shared meals and intentional conversation and prayer, we might just turn the ship around.

MOVING FORWARD: How can you step further into community and be a part of the plan?
