2 Kings 5:12b-13 [Naaman] turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, “Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”
When there is a great thing to do, it is the great thing that counts. But though great things make up the rare crises in life, it is the long chain of little things that lead up and prepare the way for them...It is a shock to the over-romantic when they see the manuscript of a masterpiece marked up with corrections and amendments. They thought it had been dashed off letter-perfect in a moment of inspiration!
Discipleship is “the great obedience,” but it is taken a little step at a time. Am I willing for Christ’s sake not to do something with a tremendous thrill but to take up even a tedious life with all its unromantic details, only now with the sense that I do each little thing as it comes along to the best of my powers, and for Jesus’ sake? It was the servants who pleaded with Naaman.
MOVING FORWARD: How do you feel about the tedious parts of your life and ministry? What will you do about that?
