Luke 12:14 But [Jesus] said to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?”

When I graduated from college, I thought I wanted to become a college professor. I took two years off and taught English in South Korea. I learned a lot about the teaching profession—including that I do not like giving grades.

I didn’t mind grading papers, noting what was factually incorrect or needed additional work. Instead, it was that less obvious but clear requirement that I, a person in authority, place people in a hierarchy, judging that one person is better than another.

I’ve since realized further nuances to this understanding, helped along by my spiritual guidance ministry. Each one of us brings different gifts, skills, experiences, and sense of self-worth to what we do. Everyone is equal in God’s sight—and should be in mine, as well.

Living this out is not always easy, but it is my goal—and I am grateful for the example Jesus sets for us in today’s gospel lesson.

MOVING FORWARD: The next time you feel the urge to judge or grade someone, take an extra minute to pray for open eyes and a soft heart.
