FRIDAY, November 30     Saint Andrew, Apostle

Deuteronomy 30:14 No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.

Today the church remembers Saint Andrew, often referred to as “the first called.” This alludes both to Andrew’s quick response in following Jesus and how he brought his brother Simon Peter to meet the Lord. I serve a church dedicated to Saint Andrew. We are a friendly and loving group of people, and the people of God alongside whom I serve are a wonderful example of a vibrant community of faith.

Is the congregation’s charism of welcoming the stranger and joy in serving God a result of Andrew’s intercession on our behalf? I hope and pray so. Growing up, I was taught to believe that the Church on earth and in heaven are one in the same, that those we love but see no longer serve God through praise and prayer around a heavenly throne. They wait, as we all do, for the day we will be reunited one to another.

Blessed Andrew, pray for us.

MOVING FORWARD: Do a little research on Saint Andrew. How can his example of faith encourage you?
