MONDAY, March 30

Mark 9:37 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.

While on one of his preaching and teaching walks, Jesus overhears the disciples arguing about the greatest among them, and he lets them know how he feels about this conversation. Maybe they are trying to understand Jesus’ explanation of the kingdom. The disciples wonder how the glory of Jesus reflects on them: What will they get out of this?

Jesus shows his friends and all of us that he understands their argument, and puts it to rest by giving them the example of offering hospitality to a child. How we welcome the most vulnerable and powerless members of society is the measure of the welcome given to Jesus and the One who makes us one. The argument cannot be about pride of place in line but rather about treating others with sacrificial love and abundant grace.

MOVING FORWARD: Outside of your relationship with Jesus, who has shown you sacrificial love and abundant grace? How has this changed you?
