FRIDAY, April 30

Colossians 3:8 But now you must get rid of all such things—anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth.

I have an ordained friend who removes her clerical collar first thing when she gets into the car. She doesn’t want to make the wrong kind of hand gesture and inadvertently reflect poorly on her faith. I can relate. Every now and then I’ll start to say something, or maybe write something online, and then think to myself, wait a minute, this isn’t fitting for a Christian. To be honest, sometimes I fail.

Reading this part of Colossians, it’s pretty clear that if we are truly in Christ, our lives will show the fruits of our conversion. In our baptism, we died to sin. We are meant to die to sin every day. It’s not easy.

But the answer is there, too. “Set your minds on things that are above.” Regular prayer, scripture study, and time in worship reminds us of who we are and how we are meant to live. And we are never alone. The Holy Spirit abides with us, ready to guide us if only we open our lives to God’s way.

MOVING FORWARD: Will they know you are Christian by your love or by your words—and hand gestures?
