SUNDAY, June 30                           3 Pentecost

Luke 9:60 But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

We read this portion of Luke earlier in the month, and we can see something new each time we open ourselves to the Word. Over the last two thousand years, there have been many efforts to make following Jesus more palatable and attractive. Some of these efforts have been wildly successful, and others have failed miserably.

While Jesus’ message of grace and love brings tremendous comfort, his goal is our salvation. Comfort has very little, if anything, to do with it. Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection are meant to take us out of our comfort zones, and his words are supposed to make us squirm—sometimes a lot. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, seeks to gather all his sheep safely under his care.

MOVING FORWARD: Invite a new friend to attend a church service or other function with you.
