TUESDAY, June 30

Matthew 21:28-29 A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went.

A Sunday School teacher told me that one of the best things about The Book of Common Prayer was that even when his faith wavered, he was still able to come and join together with the church and to let the prayers cover him. He said that the moments when it was rote for him were actually some of the most transformational.

What we do in this life is forming us for something—either to love God or to love ourselves. Faith is what we believe, but faithfulness is when we act like the things we believe are true. Faithfulness means practicing what isn’t always in our hearts so that it will become a part of us. Showing up, even if we’re late or we don’t have the best intentions, is still a reasonable and God-blessed start.

MOVING FORWARD: Try praying Evening Prayer every day this week, even if your heart isn’t in it. Just show up and let God do the rest.
