TUESDAY, July 30

Mark 6:42-44 And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.

The Avett Brothers sing a song that makes me think about the miracle of the loaves and fish. The song seems to be about trying to run from sin and shortcomings by moving from town to town. But every time I hear one particular lyric, it conjures the image of Jesus feeding the 5,000.

I once heard the worst thing a man can do is draw a hungry crowd
Tell everyone his name, pride, and confidence
But leaving out his doubts

The thought of Jesus having a shred of doubt as he stood in front of the hungry hordes tweaks my heart. For me, this lyric and corresponding thought teases out the true risk involved in miracles. Any time I can connect with Jesus’ humanity, I feel closer to him.

MOVING FORWARD: What would it have felt like to take that risk? What risks do you take in the name of God?
