MONDAY, August 30                  [Ward, Clitherow, and Line]

Psalm 15:6 He does not give his money in hope of gain, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.

Many came forward to give false testimony against Jesus. Their dishonesty surpassed their coordination, but allegedly faithful people got up in a religious court to lie in hopes of advancing their standing. The story is so familiar that we may not recognize the parallels with contemporary examples. Many of our current struggles around justice and racism arise from the frequency of past falsehoods used to acquit violent behavior. Trust is lost when deceit protects position and the status quo.

James’s letter offers another way that implicit bribes are taken against the poor. When we overlook those that society considers less important so we can cater to the wealthy and powerful, we also perjure ourselves. Our actions testify that some people are more valuable than others, or at least that we consider them so. We can be appalled at those who lied about Jesus and convinced we would never do so ourselves yet still find ourselves tempted to be hypnotized by the wealthy while ignoring the needy.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you give more credence to the words of the wealthy than those of the poor? What would Jesus say about your answer?
