WEDNESDAY, September 30                  Jerome

Psalm 101:2 I will strive to follow a blameless course; oh, when will you come to me? I will walk with sincerity of heart within my house.

What I love most about studying scripture is that they teach through narrative. There is no directive that stands untroubled or unquestioned. The commands of the Old Testament are reinterpreted through the New Testament.

The red-letter words of Jesus cross each other and contradict across the gospels. Acts takes us on the wild ride during which the epistles were written, each missive put into context alongside the singular community it was meant to instruct. This is the story of the people of God studying God’s blameless way and wondering when they will attain it.

With each story, we recognize signposts. Some are clearly well within the path, some well beyond, and most somewhere on the edge. We bear witness to deeply human attempts at answering divine calling. May we study the way that is blameless, knowing that we are in good company with all who have struggled to attain it.

MOVING FORWARD: How will you be walking with sincerity into October?

PRAY for your own diocese.
