WEDNESDAY, January 31

John 6:56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.

I’ve had a spiritual tilt since I was a child. I was baptized in the Roman Catholic church and confirmed as an Episcopalian. I cried when Pope John XXIII died in 1963; I was five and afraid something had happened to God.

On a summer’s night in 1980, I did something I never expected. During an altar call at a revival, I accepted Jesus as my savior. I had never taken such an intentional step toward Christ.

Driving home from work a few days later, I was wrestling with a persistent, deep sadness when I heard a clear voice: “Be happy.” I knew it was Jesus. The overwhelming presence of love filled my car. Crying tears of joy, I pulled off the road. My acute awareness of this presence persisted for hours. It was as if the air— the world itself—was love, not the emotion, but the actual living entity. I was in love. Love was in me.

Everything Jesus says about God and love is gospel truth. Every night can be Christmas Eve and every morning Easter.

MOVING FORWARD: How has Jesus spoken to your heart? How did you respond?
