John 6:15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Jesus flees the attempt by the crowd to make him into a worldly king just as he resisted this same line of temptation from the devil in the wilderness. He retreats into prayer and rises above this worldly temptation because Jesus calls on God to still his heart and keep his focus. Likewise, we are called to seek Christ within the hearts of the faithful, remembering that he is the vine and we are the branches, and apart from him we can do nothing.
Our citizenship in God’s kingdom supersedes any allegiance to this world. This way of being family ties us together in ways more powerful than any political or social differences could ever divide us.
MOVING FORWARD: Make plans with your close friends and family to take a retreat together this spring.
