MONDAY, December 31

John 8:14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.”

Jesus and I both come from places that we understand and identify with down to our bones. I’m a sixth-generation native Texan, and some of my relatives came from Europe to Appalachia to the wide-open spaces of McCulloch County and stayed there. That’s where I’m from.

Jesus can trace his family line all the way to Eden, into the very dust of creation. It’s mindboggling to contemplate the time span that existed between Adam and Jesus and further still to the time between Jesus and me. But here we both are, two kids from the hill country, doing the life work that spiritual leader Ram Dass says is really just walking each other home. We know where we are from; we are well met on this road, and wherever we go next, I am grateful to follow him.

MOVING FORWARD: How does where you are from inform where you are going?
