TUESDAY, December 31

James 4:14-15 Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.”

New year’s resolutions are intended to make our lives better in some way. Better habits, more productivity, less stress. I think James is right to remind us that we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Today we stand on the precipice of clean slate, a fresh start, as we prepare to usher in the new year. But we don’t know what comes next.

What if we sought meaning instead of just getting better? What if we said, If the Lord wishes. What would a new year full of uncertainty but also full of God look like?

What does God wish for you, dear friend, but that you live abundantly? We do not know what tomorrow will bring. God is here, and that’s all the resolution we need.

MOVING FORWARD: Spend a part of your quiet time today sharing your hopes with God—and listen to what God is saying back.
