SUNDAY, May 31                           Feast of Pentecost

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Imagine the moment: Peter has gathered the disciples and followers of Jesus, about 120 or so. They cast lots to select a new disciple and before Matthias has even settled into the role, a rush of wind blows through the house. Tongues of fire rest upon them, and a holy cacophony breaks out.

It’s an amazing scene, to be sure. But the Feast of Pentecost is not simply a story about the Holy Spirit as divine translator. Rather, the breath of God sweeps them out into the world, telling all who will listen (and some who’d rather not) about the Good News of the risen Christ.

Each day—and especially on this day—we are called to follow in the footsteps of these early followers, to move beyond celebration with the already convinced and into conversation with all in our communities. We need not worry about finding all the right words; if we’re willing to follow, the Holy Spirit will lead the way.

MOVING FORWARD: Imagine yourself clothed in the armor of God. How does thinking this way change how you approach the day?
