WEDNESDAY, July 31

Psalm 119:73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments.

I read Henri Nouwen’s Life of the Beloved in my early twenties. Reading that I was precious in God’s eyes simply because God made me and I am God’s was revolutionary, even for someone who had grown up in church. I guess I had gotten stuck in some alternative narratives of a punishing and angry God. At the very least, God seemed miles away from me, not close to my heart with the kind of immediacy Nouwen describes.

Deep intimacy with God is vitally important. Without it, I’m in danger of living out my faith from a fearful and untrusting place. When I trust that God loves me, I can give abundantly of myself as a servant to God and my neighbor.

MOVING FORWARD: Add Life of the Beloved to your reading list.
