James 2:22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works.

Some years ago, I began a practice of centering prayer. Talking with a longtime practitioner, I learned that the point of prayer was not to have a good prayer time but to bear the good fruit of love in our lives.

I found this guidance to be essential as I grew in all my prayer practices. Some days, prayer was calming and immediately restorative. I could finish a time of prayer and feel like the Holy Spirit had shown up. Other times, I might block off a half-hour for praying and struggle through every minute as mental distractions and physical itches plagued me. Those days, I was just grateful when my prayer time was over. Either way, taking this time for regular silence before God proved transformative in my life. I was able to be the person I wanted to be with my family, with my ministry, and in all areas of my life. I also could do more, even taking time for prayer, as God gradually removed self-defeating thoughts and behaviors that robbed my time and energy.

MOVING FORWARD: Try the spiritual practice of centering prayer. Give it at least a week to see if it’s a practice that strengthens your spiritual life.
