MONDAY, January 4                  [Elizabeth Ann Seton]

John 14:12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

Born in 1774 in New York City, Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first person from the United States of America to be beatified by the Vatican. Mother Seton founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, the first order of nuns in the United States. Seton’s name is on many schools and hospitals to this day. My son was born in a Seton hospital.

Mother Seton worked to educate poor children, to provide healthcare for them, and to do so in a Christian context. I think it is especially lovely that her day of remembrance is during Christmastide, the season of Incarnation because that is how Mother Seton lived her faith and saw God in Christ. She saw the face of Jesus in every person she met, and by loving them, she loved God.

MOVING FORWARD: Do a little research about Elizabeth Ann Seton, America’s first saint!
